I'm joining Jen and Kelle from Teach Mentor Texts in this weekly post
Oh my, my reading has
taken a nosedive. I’ve found my white whale, my book that will be so hard to conquer,
and it is called The Story of Mankind. But I’m getting ahead of myself,
here’s what I read this week:
Pete the Cat: Rocking
in My School Shoes by Eric Litwin
I Spy With My Little
Eye by Edward Gibbs
The Sixty-Eight Rooms by Marianne Malone (amazing, see book review)
My Life in Dog Years by Gary Paulsen
Prudence Wants a Pet by Cathleen Daly
Great books, I feel like I’m
on a roll. I’d recommend any one of them.
My reading plan for this week? I’d like to finish the sequel to The Sixty-Eight Rooms, which is called Stealing Magic. What else?

Let me say, this isn’t
AWFUL. It really isn’t. But I feel like I’m back in undergrad reading a history
textbook. That isn’t what I like to do with my reading free time. Ever so often
I’ll say to my husband, “Hey, listen to what I just learned?” and rattle off
some fact from this book. But I can’t get over that the intended audience is
(supposedly) children. There is no child I can ever imagine one – picking this
book up or two – enjoying it. As I said, I’m a history major. I actually have
the majority of the background needed for this book, and I’m still struggling.
But, I will defeat this white whale, it will not defeat me. And thus, it is my
first goal of the week. I’m currently on page 145. I’m trying about 50 pages a
day (and not reading the added chapters of the updated version) and I should
finish this week. Maybe if I get on a roll I’ll read even more, we’ll see.
Have a great week and
happy reading!

I'm glad that you don't think Mankind is awful. I have tons of respect for anyone that can finish THAT book.
ReplyDeletePrudence Wants a Pet is one of my favorite books of 2011.
Sorry you're having a tough time with 'the' book, Katherine. When I read it, remember I had a real purpose, to help a student work with different periods of history, so we took it a little at a time. Maybe that would help. I liked hearing about Sixty-Eight Rooms in your post!
ReplyDeleteMankind does look like a tome - very overwhelming. Perhpas Linda's idea of breaking it up into chunks would also make it less of a chore. I LOVED Sixty Eight Rooms!
ReplyDeletePete the Cat and Prudence Wants a Pet are so great. I love both of those. I have Stealing Magic in my near future TBR so I can read and review it before it's out on the 24th. I'm excited! :)
