I mentioned that we’re working on our character. We’re trying to Choose Kind
and Be Brave. After reading Deborah Freedman’s beautiful book, The Story of
Fish and Snail, I knew I wanted to do something with my students, but I was
searching for what to do. Fortunately, Twitter came through again. Pernille
Ripp created a beautiful video of her students sharing how they were going to “be
brave.” I showed that video to my students and we talked about the kids and
their choices. We learned how being brave is individualistic – it’s different for
everyone. They thought of what they wanted to accomplish this year and created
their own signs.

I teach seventh grade and have been teaching for over twenty years. I am using this as a space for reflection on teaching, reading, writing, and life in general. My hope is that reading these posts brightens your day and you join in if you desire to do so.
